Gretna BMX Featured in The Times-Picayne

RACE FORMAT FOR 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Cycling (BMX)

Eight Competitors to Compete for Spot on 2008 U.S. Olympic Team June 14

Colorado Springs, Colo. (May 21, 2008)—USA Cycling and the United States Olympic Committee today released a detailed description of the event format that will be utilized at next month’s 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for the sport of BMX.

Scheduled for Saturday, June 14 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., the U.S. Olympic Team Trials will feature eight competitors with the overall winner earning an automatic nomination to the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team.

Following the completion of the 2008 UCI BMX World Championships in Taiyuan, China on June 1, USA Cycling will announce the eight-man roster of invitees for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

At the Trials, participants will compete in a series of five races and accumulate points throughout the day in order to determine an overall winner. The following guidelines illustrate the format that will be used at the Olympic Trials to determine one men’s automatic nomination to the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team:

1. The Field: Eight (8) riders selected to the U.S. Olympic Long Team for BMX will be competing for an automatic position to the final U.S. Olympic Team. These riders will be announced on June 8.

2. Basics: The riders will compete in a total of five races – one Time Trial, three Motos and a Final. Points will be awarded to the top 3 finishers in the Time Trial, the top 4 finishers in each Moto and the top 5 finishers in the Final. The rider with the greatest number of points at the end of the event will be declared the winner and will be named to the U.S. Olympic Team.

3. Time Trial (Seeding): Riders will be seeded in the Time Trial event based upon the final standings of the 2008 USA Cycling BMX Rankings. The rider with the lowest ranking among the starters will ride first, followed by the next highest and so on. The top-ranked rider among the starters will ride last in the Time Trial.

4. Time Trial (Placing): The top 3 riders in the Time Trial will be awarded 5, 3, and 1 point (s) respectively. In the case of a tie in the top 3 riders, the riders tied will both be awarded points for that placing, although it may preclude other riders from scoring. (Example: if two riders tie for second place, they will both receive 3 points, but the next rider would be fourth and receive no points.) If there is a tie for riders outside of the top 3, the riders who tie will draw lots (or flip a coin) to determine placing.

5. Motos (Lane Choice): There will be 3 Motos. Lane choice for start positions for the first Moto will be determined by the time trial, with the rider finishing first getting lane choice, followed by the second rider in the time trial and so on. In the case of a tie in the time trial, the riders who tie will draw lots (or flip a coin) to determine position for lane choice. Choice for start position in the subsequent Motos will be determined by the current points standings. In the case of a tie in the points standings, the placing in the previous Moto will be used as a tiebreaker.

6. Motos (Placing): There will be two photo-finish cameras to determine order of finish. The top 4 riders in each Moto will be awarded 10, 7, 5 and 3 points respectively. In the case of a dead heat (tie) for a position among the top 4 riders, the riders tied will both be awarded points for that placing, although it may preclude other riders from scoring. (Example: if two riders tie for third place, they will both receive 5 points, but the next rider would be fifth and receive no points.) If there is a tie for riders outside the top 4, the riders who tie will draw lots (or flip a coin) to determine placing.

7. Final (Lane Choice): Lane choice for start position in the Final will be determined by current points standings. In the case of a tie, the placing of the previous Moto will be used as a tiebreaker. Only riders who are in contention for the win will be allowed to start the final.

8. Final (Placing): The top 5 riders in the Final will be awarded points: 15, 12, 10, 7, and 5 respectively. In the case of a dead heat (tie) for a position among the top 5 riders, the riders tied will both be awarded points for that placing.

9. Final Points Standings: The rider who finishes the event with the greatest number of points will be determined the winner. If there is a tie for first place overall, the tiebreakers will be utilized in the following order:

10. Final Team Announcement: The final 2008 U.S. Olympic BMX Team will be announced with all USA Cycling Olympic Teams on July 1, 2008.

BMX Olympic hopefuls to appear on the NBC Today Show
The American Bicycle Association Builds Olympic Enthusiasm With Today Show Demo

Gilbert, Arizona—April 25, 2008— The American Bicycle Association (ABA) "The Sanctioning Body of BMX", continues its diligent promotion of the sport. Now, after weeks of preparations, negotiations and working with the bicycle industry and supportive sponsors it announces a spotlight appearance on NBC`s Today Show. NBC`s leading morning news and information show has scheduled a demonstration and feature of BMX, the newest Olympic sport for Wednesday, April 30th 2008.

The Today Show will feature USA`s top BMX Olympic hopefuls Kyle Bennett, Donny Robinson and Arielle Martin. The true excitement is that an actual dirt BMX track will be constructed in Rockefeller Plaza for this first ever demonstration. The abbreviated track will feature a starting hill with electronic gate, a 120` straight, a roller section and a 16" double jump for Kyle, Donny and Arielle to showcase their skills. It`s even rumored that some of the hosts of the show may even give it a try.

“BMX racers are the most skilled cyclists in the world, from sprinting to negotiating jumps, BMX racers develop these skills at a very young age. It’s great that the media will finally witness these skills, The Today Show is just the start of the media coverage our sport is about to receive.” said Clayton John, ABA President.

The show will air April 30th from 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM and will not only highlight our potential BMX Olympians, The Today show will also give some of the top amateurs in the World the opportunity to demonstrate their skills on Rockefeller Plaza. Conner Fields, Christopher Blevins, Anthony Derosa, Kristen Long as well as SI Kids "Youth Athlete of the Year" Brock Heffron and ABA`s current National #1 Amateur Nic Long will all be in attendance.

“After 32 years of organizing and promoting the sport in the United States, the American Bicycle Association is excited about the exposure, notoriety and legitimacy the Olympics will bring to the sport.” stated B.A. Anderson, ABA Vice President.

The entire project with the Today Show was made possible by a collaborative effort from the American Bicycle Association and ABA national sponsors Fly Racing, FireMagic Premium Grills, Jigaloo lubricant, and GT Bicycles with help from Free Agent, NBL and USA Cycling. 2008 ABA BMX PRO Standing through Super Nationals- Desoto, TX.

The American Bicycle Association hosted the Super Nationals this past weekend, March, 27-30 in Desoto, TX. The racing at the Super National event was just that, SUPER! The city of Desoto, TX. and the Metroplex crew really stepped it up with a brand new covered staging addition to the facility being added just for this event. ABA BMX ace track builder, Billy Allen, also built a very challenging track just for this event. This was the third PRO Series event of the year and Metroplex facility has become one of the PRO Riders favorite stops on the tour. The Metroplex BMX facility was the first of it`s kind in the world and it has some of the best dirt in the country. The, fans, riders, and industry all come out in full force each year for this event.

With the 2008 Olympic debut just around the corner for BMX racing, the buzz and hype is all around. There is getting to be more and more of the media frenzy at each event. Many of the sports top athletes from around the world were on hand to take a shot at getting some much needed points towards the ABA BMX titles. The 2008 season is shifting into high gear and the fans are loving it! Round three continued to be Danny C.and David Herman show.They were spotted all over the PRO podiums on the weekend. "DR" Donny Robinson made an appearance for the fans in Desoto and nailed down a solid second in AA PRO on day #1. Past 3-time ABA National #1 PRO, Bubba Harris, continued to show the fans he`s on the comeback trail. Bubba was seen making some of his pattended swoop moves in the turns and looked great through the rhythm sections. It was great to see Bubba back up on the podium and I expect to see that a lot more from the former champ! Current ABA National #1 PRO, Danny "Easy Money" Caluag, continued his win streak of at least winning one at each of the ABA BMX PRO series stops. "Easy Money" brought home his third AA PRO win of the season on day one. Day #2 saw Danny C. in the main but some tough racing kept him off the box. Danny is proving once again his ABA National #1 PRO tile was no fluke! Day #2 saw Kyle Bennett take his first AA PRO win of the year. Kyle looks to be making a very strong bid for the USA`s first ever BMX Olympic team. Kyle seems to be on a mission and on track to be in China in 2008. One things for sure, Kyle is one exciting guy to watch! David Herman put in another solid ride on day #2 with a second for the day and his performance for the weeknd also moved him up to 2nd in the ABA BMX PRO points battle charts behind team mate Danny C. Day #2 also saw Randy Stumpfhauser back on the podium. Randy looked to be one of the fastest guys all weekend. Which was a surprise considering he was just coming off a bad injury. Stumpy is about as solid as they come in the PRO ranks and you can never count the guy out for a win.

On the Ladies side we saw the return of ABA National #1 ladies PRO Alise Post. Everyone was excited to see the showdown between Alise and Dominique Daniels. And the ladies didn`t disappoint the fans! They battled out all weekend long and the Metroplex stands were going crazy! Alise showed why she`s #1 and stood on top of the box both days. Dominique stayed strong and should she know "rookie" taking home a 2nd and 3rd for the weekend. Day #1 saw Amanda Geving on the box with a solid 3rd. Day #2 saw another rookie PRO sensation Rachel Luna finish up the day with a solid 2nd. The ladies racing has really stepped it up over the last couple of years and the new crop of younger woman is very promissing for more excitement to come.

Pro Cruiser was the ABA National #1 PRO Cruiser rider Danny C., Kenth Fallen, and Tyler Brown battling out this weekend. These three went at it toe to toe and when the dust settled it was Tyler Brown with a one, two for the weekend. Danny C. had a bad crash on day #1`s main event, but he came back strong on day #2 win another big win. Kenth Fallen hung tough with a two and three for the weekend. Mike GUL should he can still hang with the big boys and nailed down a 3rd on day #1. The PRO Cruiser battle charts have really tightened up and it should be a very interesting season to see who comes out on top.

Vet Pro was one heck of a show between Fallen, Street, and Tim Dinger. Kenth Fallen continued to show he`s the man to beat in Vet PRO right. Kenth picked up the VET PRO win both days and now looks to be stretching out his points lead for the season. Chad Street looked as fast as ever and was all over Kenth most of the weekend. Chad had some bad luck come main time, but many of fans were calling the home town boy for a win. Chad was able to bring home a 2nd and 3rs for the weekend. Onther rider that continues to impress is the skinny kid out of North Carolina. Tim Dinger has some blazing speed and skills to pay the bills. Many say Dinger made the move of the weekend when Chad Street went down in turn two in front of Dinger and Tim just bunny hopped him and didn`t miss a beat on the track. It was a very impressive piece of riding I must say. Both Street and Dinger look to be title contender come ABA Grands time!

The ABA, the city of Desoto, TX. and the entire Metroplex crew would like to thank all the participants, families, teams, sponsors, and BMX industry for helping make the Desoto, TX. event such a huge success!

ABA National and District Points will only be available on Friday and Sunday.
Saturday will be the USA Cycling BMX National Championships and will be run according to UCI Rules.
UCI Random Gate will be utilized for Saturday’s event only.

ONLY US CITIZENS ARE ALLOWED TO COMPETE
in Saturday’s USAC National Championship.
ALL RIDERS MUST BRING PROOF OF US CITIZENSHIP
(Birth Certificate or Passport)

You must present a signed USAC waiver and USOC media waiver, available here in order to race.

USAC Championship Main Event Winner will receive a USA Jersey

The USAC National Championship will be the only way to qualify for the 2008 UCI World Championships in China.

Important UCI Rules

Categories and Participation

Age of Participants
A rider must be at least 5 years of age to compete in a UCI sanctioned BMX event. The minimum age of 5 refers to the real calendar age on the day of race commencement.
The category a rider is eligible to ride is determined by his age which shall be calculated by deducting the year of birth from the current year.
A rider aged 17 years or over may choose to compete at either Championship or Challenge level at the beginning of the season namely in the appropriate age and gender group in standard bicycle categories (20")and/or cruiser categories (24”).
The calendar season starts on August 1 and continues until July 31 of the following year.
Helmets must be of full face construction equipped with a visor of minimum 10 centimeters. Helmet strap must be securely fastened during the completion of the race. Open face helmets are not allowed.
Gloves whose fingers completely cover the rider’s finger tips.
A rider cannot ride in both Championship and Challenge levels at the same event.

Participant Information

All participants will receive a USAC number plate for the event based on the order in which they presign for each class. Numbers 1-8 will be reserved for riders who made the main at the USAC National Championship last year.
All pre registered riders must check in to receive number plates and turn in signed waivers.
Winners of the National Championship will be awarded a Stars and Stripes Jersey as well as Medals for 1st through 3rd.

Participant Checklist

All riders must provide proof of US Citizenship. Only Birth Certificates or Passports
will be accepted. Documentation must be provided during registration hours for all riders,
including pre-signed riders.

All riders must sign USAC waiver and USAC Media Release, and both documents must be brought to registration. See Attached. If not an ABA member you must also sign an ABA waiver.

Riders who have presigned will need to check in at “Packet Pick-up” to receive their number plate and to provide proof of US Citizenship and USAC waiver and USAC Media Release. NO EXCEPTIONS!

(February 28, 2008) – The American Bicycle Association (ABA) has named American Suzuki Motor Corporation the official motorcycle and ATV of the 2008 ABA BMX (bicycle motocross) Race Series. The 2008 race schedule includes 27 National events and 13 Pro series events throughout North America.

Suzuki motorcycles and ATVs are a major sponsor of the 2008 ABA BMX event schedule and will be fully integrated into the BMX events nationwide. INTRODUCING THE JOEY BRADFORD DISABILITY FUND – Monterey, California – BMX Racing is a dangerous sport. As with the majority of professional sports, the money earned is all-too-often not enough to make ends meet, let alone pay for something as expensive as medical bills. Professional BMX racer Joey Bradford has seen far too many fellow riders and industry professionals become engulfed in insurmountable medical bills stemming from injury or illness. For this reason, in early 2007, the then 17-year old racer took it upon himself to do something about it. With help from his family and key industry veterans, Bradford conceptualized and developed the Joey Bradford Disability Fund.

WHAT IT IS

The Foundation, a federally recognized and regulated non-profit organization, aims to ease the burden of medical bills, either by injury or illness, for BMX professionals as well as BMX industry professionals, those whose primary income comes from the BMX industry itself. “Getting injured is the worst thing that can happen to a professional athlete,” states Professional BMX racer Brandon Meadows. “When I broke my femur for the second time, things seem to go downhill real fast. I just started a family, lost my sponsor, broke my leg, no way to make any money, and it soon came to a realization that it was going to be hard to make ends meet.”

Applicants must apply themselves or via a family member and their case will be reviewed by the five person Fund Committee. If the application is approved, up to 50% of the fund can be released to help with monetary medical obligations. The five person Fund committee members are as follows- Jerry Bradford, Joey Bradford, Anthony Derosa, Pete Dylewski, and Shannon Gillette.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

At this time, donations to the fund are welcome and invited. In the past, donations have usually been accepted after a rider is injured or takes ill. With this fund, donations can be made any time, at the donor’s convenience, plus all donations are tax deductible. Plus, donors will have the ability to donate to a specific injured or ill athlete or industry professional directly on the Fund site.

ABA Owner Bernie Anderson Recognized For his Contributions to BMX

Gilbert , Arizona —September 12, 2007— The ABA (American Bicycle Association) is very proud to announce that company owner; Bernard (Bernie) R. Anderson will be recognized along with five other bicycling notables to the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame induction ceremony is to be held October 20, 2007 at the Hyatt Regency, New Brunswick , New Jersey .

Bernie Anderson is a pioneer in the sport of BMX having his start in 1976. Originally from Jackson County and Kanawha County West Virginia and a resident of San Antonio , Texas since 1954; Bernie Anderson became a leader in the BMX racing community during its formative years. It is Anderson ’s drive and love of the sport that has kept him active during the decades of growth the sport has realized. Bernie started four state-of-the-art BMX racing facilities in Southwestern Texas and was a force that led the sport to prominence throughout the state. Known for his hospitality, Anderson has always enjoyed entertaining amateur and Pro racers from all around the country including fellow U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame members Toby Henderson, Greg Hill and Stu Thompson

A successful entrepreneur, Anderson realized that he could be part of making the sport of BMX an important aspect of the bicycle community. In 1985, after being a track operator and parent of two boys who raced, Anderson purchased the American Bicycle Association. The sanction was suffering and greatly needed the business savvy that he brought to the company. From bankruptcy, he has built the ABA into the largest sanctioning body for BMX in the world. Innovative programs and the enjoyment of the sport have provided him the abilities to push for continued growth. It is his progression through the sport that provided the needed insight for the varied tasks of the ABA ; A BMX parent from 1976 -1978, a leading Track Operator from 1978-1985, Manufacturer of Rebel Racing Frames 1981-1984 and ABA owner 1985-present.

Now retired, Bernie Anderson still attends many of the ABA events and is active in the planning and management of the ABA . The Texan who in the 1970’s saw more than kids on a dirt lot has helped shape the sport of BMX. It is for his continued efforts in shaping the sport and promoting its popularity that has earned him the recognition of the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame. However, Anderson is quick to recognize that without the ABA ’s President Clayton John, the employees, track operators, sponsors, families and the racers; ABA would not be the leader in BMX that it is today.

The U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame is soon to be located in central New Jersey and is an advocate for all aspects of cycling. The U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who have collectively or individually left their mark on cycling. The individuals are inducted for their dedication and efforts to promote bicycling.

USAC Championship Main Event Winner will receive a USA Jersey

The USAC National Championship will be the only way to qualify for the 2008 UCI World Championships in China.

Important UCI Rules

Categories and Participation

Age of Participants
A rider must be at least 5 years of age to compete in a UCI sanctioned BMX event. The minimum age of 5 refers to the real calendar age on the day of race commencement.
The category a rider is eligible to ride is determined by his age which shall be calculated by deducting the year of birth from the current year.
A rider aged 17 years or over may choose to compete at either Championship or Challenge level at the beginning of the season namely in the appropriate age and gender group in standard bicycle categories (20")and/or cruiser categories (24”).
The calendar season starts on August 1 and continues until July 31 of the following year.
Helmets must be of full face construction equipped with a visor of minimum 10 centimeters. Helmet strap must be securely fastened during the completion of the race. Open face helmets are not allowed.
Gloves whose fingers completely cover the rider’s finger tips.
A rider cannot ride in both Championship and Challenge levels at the same event.

Participant Information

All participants will receive a USAC number plate for the event based on the order in which they presign for each class. Numbers 1-8 will be reserved for riders who made the main at the USAC National Championship last year.
All pre registered riders must check in to receive number plates and turn in signed waivers.
Winners of the National Championship will be awarded a Stars and Stripes Jersey as well as Medals for 1st through 3rd.

Participant Checklist

All riders must sign USAC waiver and USAC Media Release, and both documents must be brought to registration. See Attached. If not an ABA member you must also sign an ABA waiver.

Riders who have presigned will need to check in at “Packet Pick-up” to receive their number plate and to provide proof of US Citizenship and USAC waiver and USAC Media Release. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Gilbert, Arizona—October 17, 2007— The American Bicycle Association (ABA) Fall Nationals/Disney Cup bicycle motocross (BMX) is being held October 26-28, 2007 at Walt Disney World Resort. The events will be held at Disney’s Pop Century resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida and will feature the excitement of top professional BMX racers in one of the final events on the 15-stop ABA BMX PRO Tour.
The event will feature competitors from across the U.S. and Europe, Canada, Australia and Japan. It’s being hosted by Disney’s Wide World of Sports, which is expected to host several BMX events over the next five years.
The ABA has structured the Disney events as family adventures, allowing BMX racers and their families to enjoy the Walt Disney World Resort and race an ABA National event. Walt Disney World Resort will provide a unique location that has never before been experienced in the sport of BMX. The sport of BMX is one of the very first “Action Sports” to host a national level event at Disney.
“Since we announced that ABA had reached an agreement with Disney’s Wide World of Sports to hold a national event, the enthusiasm and excitement could not have been better. Parents and racers have expressed their interest in participating in a race that combines the love of BMX with the Disney magic!” exclaimed Clayton John, President of the ABA.
The ABA’s professional track designers and construction crew began on-site preparations of the BMX track earlier this month. With loads of dirt brought in specifically for the BMX track, and countless hours of pre-preparation, Disney’s Pop Century resort will become home to Florida’s newest world-class BMX track, at least temporarily. The dirt course is approximately 1100 feet long and combines jumps, obstacles and bermed corners. Racers riding specially prepared BMX bicycles compete on the course separated by age and skill level. The prizes include trophies for amateurs and cash prizes for the pros; however, the ultimate reward is the points that are earned. The valuable points are accrued throughout the year and ultimately earn riders prized number plates, the best being a coveted #1.

2007 ABA BMX Hall of Fame Inductees announced!

The American Bicycle Association is proud to announce this year’s inductees to the ABA BMX Hall of Fame. The ABA is in its 30th year of operations as the largest BMX sanction in the world. The ABA BMX Hall of Fame began in 1985 and is now in its 23rd year. The annual Hall of Fame Banquet takes place in Tulsa, Oklahoma at ABA`s host hotel, the Crowne Plaza, Wednesday November 21st 2:00pm. Seats are limited so be sure to get there early!

This year, the ABA BMX Hall`O Fame welcomes the following people for their contributions to the sport of BMX:

Dennis Dain: Best known as the “Red Baron”, this Western Sports-A-Rama local was pilot of the world’s greatest side-hack team. During the hack era of the 70’s, Dain & Ruiz were on top, practically undefeated between the years 1975 to 1979. He was one of the original bike testers for Elaine Holt’s Bicycle Motocross News (the sport’s first newspaper). Dain was one of the first racers to be sponsored by GT, and even had his own Dain replica frame. He also rode for Redline and was a longtime racer for ABA BMX Hall of Famer “Big Daddy” Ralph throughout most of his career. Dain was a founding member of PRO. Dennis still lives in California and works for UPS.

Greg Grubbs: Greg was the first racer from Nebraska to make a name for his self on the national circuit. Not only was he fast, he was the hero to many racers that wore glasses and he was well known for his sense of humor. Greg started racing in 1976, turned Pro at age 15 in 1980, then won the ABA Cornhusker National in the 16 expert class, back when you could race Pro and expert in the same day. In 1981, he won 12 ABA single A races, while riding for SE Racing in the summer. He won the Jag World Championships in A Pro and Pro Open in 1981. In 1982, he was picked up by Redline and won his first race for his new sponsor in Orlando , Florida as AA Pro. He was featured on the December ‘82 BMX ACTION cover. He finished the ‘82 season as the #3 Pro behind the Patterson Bros. In 1983, Greg was dropped from Redline and began wearing a jersey that stated “FREE AGENT”. In the summer of ‘83, he was the first instructor/counselor at the Woodward Training Center along with Mike Miranda, Mike Poulson and Joe Baumert. He briefly rode for JAG BMX. He rode for Hyper BMX from mid-1984 to end of 1985, until owner Billy Farrell was killed in an auto accident. He retired in 1986. From ‘86 to ’90, he attended the University of Nebraska , where he received his B.A. in Anthropology. He made a comeback in 1990 by winning first race back as A Pro at the Mid-West Nationals. In 1991, he blew out his knee at the Mile High Nationals and retired permanently. He was the on-camera talent for the ABA BMX TV Show “Pump”. Greg currently lives in Los Angeles where he works on commercial production and works for the TV show Motocross Files.

Elaine Holt: Elaine got involved in BMX through her marriage to Ben Holt, who had introduced a plastic gas tank for BMX. Seeing a great opportunity, Elaine came out with the first real publication devoted to BMX, “Bicycle Motocross News”, in June 1974. She actively covered BMX races and is responsible for spreading the word of BMX to tens of thousands of potential racers from the beginning. Elaine is credited with coining the term "BMX" from our sport of Bicycle Motocross.
